Dog Training - Our philosophy at Crossroads Pet Resort is simple…..Every dog can benefit from training and every dog deserves training. Proper training can give you the control you need to enjoy your relationship with your dog to the fullest. Nobody wants a dog that is unruly or destructive. Such behaviors not only dampen the relationship between you and your dog, but can also impact your friends, family, and belongings. Don’t let your unruly pooch chase away your guests with jumping or play biting. Don’t come home to yet another newly dug hole in the yard or tear in the couch. Let our positive-reinforcement based techniques show you how to get the most out of your dog so you can develop a bond that will truly last a lifetime.
The most important time for puppy socialization is the first three months of life. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (ABSAB) believes that the “standard of care for puppies is to receive such socialization before they are fully vaccinated”. At Crossroads, we have a completely enclosed, disinfected, and safe environment in which to start working with puppies. In general, puppies can start training classes as early as 7-8 weeks of age, with one set of vaccines at least 7 days prior to the first class and a first deworming.
BUT, even if you missed that window of opportunity, pets of any age in good health can be trained.

All training, including the bed & breakfast & training and daycare and training, is tailored to meet your needs and that of your dog. Regardless of training program, behavior modification & practical obedience are taught with reward based methods that are fun and effective for dogs and owners.
Our BBT educational program is a great way to get results out of your dog. We utilize fun, effective and motivational techniques based on proven scientific methods to teach your pet obedience commands and to address behavioral issues. Regardless of the program, while your pet is staying with us, we do all the groundwork teaching your dog the basics and working on any behavioral concerns. Then we provide private sessions with you to teach you what your dog has learned and to transfer that learning to you. Each program can be customized to fit your dog’s individual needs. - Four Week Basic Course – covers name response and attention, plus sit, come, down, down-stay, and walking on leash (with management equipment such as gentle leader or no-pull harness). Includes 4 private sessions at our facility with your dog’s personal trainer.
- Six Week Intermediate Course – covers name, attention, sit, down, come, stay, off , place and walking on leash. Includes 6 private sessions at our facility with your dogs personal trainer.
- Twelve Week Advanced Course – covers all behaviors in the novice program plus off-leash comes, out-of-sight stays, distance commands, stand, heel and 12 private sessions at our facility with your dog’s personal trainer.
Leaving on vacation?? We can also put together a shorter program (less than 4 weeks) to get training started. You will receive a private lesson for every week your dog is here.
While these courses indicate the commands most commonly desired by our clients, we can tailor your program to fit your dogs individual needs, including aggression, fears, and anxiety issues.
Private Training Sessions We will begin by assessing your needs and goals and evaluating your pet’s behavior. We will always give you an honest appraisal (we do not believe in selling you services you don’t need) and let you know what you can expect. We will then work with you, one-on-one, to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to create a positive relationship between you and your dog. We will teach you how to get your dog to respond to you using positive, motivational, reward-based techniques that are based on proven, scientific methods. Sessions are typically 1 to 1-1/2 hours in length and are personalized for you and your dog. Sessions can be at our training facility or in your home.

Telephone Training Consultations Questions about behavior principles, pet management, or housetraining may often be handled through a phone consultation. Also, most feline behavior and management problems are suitable for phone evaluations and consultations. Once we have assessed your situation and determined that a phone consultation is appropriate, we will be happy to set up an appointment for a phone consultations at your convenience.
Daycare and Training Program For owners who can’t imagine leaving their pooch at our resort for the course of several weeks, our Daycare and Training Program is often a welcome compromise. This program allows you to drop your dog off at our resort every day, have the dog trained by an accredited trainer, and take your pooch back home with you every night. The Daycare and Training Program is also a great way to get your dog the social skills with people and other dogs that can’t easily be replicated in private sessions alone. Each Daycare and Training Program includes a weekly training session with the your so your can maintain the same training techniques at home.
